Surf Lesson in Tamarindo: Private for Your Party or Group?

4 min read

For most beginners, the two-hour lesson with instructor and equipment is the first booking to look at. It costs €49.29 per person, runs as a private lesson for your own party and comes with a guarantee: if you do not stand up, you do not pay. Choose the private-or-group lesson when you specifically want to pick the format yourself.

What the two lessons actually say

Both lessons last two hours, so the difference is format and conditions, not extra time.

The instructor-and-equipment lesson is listed as private: just your group, up to 15 people. Your party does not share the instructor with strangers, but a large family still splits the attention among itself. It meets at the parking lot next to the El Vaquero restaurant in Tamarindo.

The private or group two-hour lesson costs €58.25. Its booking page describes 30 minutes on land for positioning, safety and the rules of surfing, then one-on-one instruction in the water. It also promises that you will stand up on a wave, though without the no-pay clause of the first lesson.

Where you surf

SINAC identifies Playa Grande and Playa Langosta, both within Las Baulas National Marine Park, as surfing beaches. That does not mean a Tamarindo lesson moves there: the first lesson meets in Tamarindo itself. Confirm the exact beach and meeting point for the second lesson in the operator’s instructions.

Which format fits

A lesson for your own party suits families and friends who learn together and want no strangers in the session. A group format can make sense if you travel alone and do not mind sharing the instructor. Private attention matters most if you are nervous in moving water or already stand up and need help with a specific weakness. Whatever you choose, check whether the price is per person or per booking for the option you select.

Timing and equipment

Two hours includes more than riding waves: expect instruction on land and time entering and leaving the water. Only the first listing explicitly names equipment in its title. For either option, verify what is provided and the participation requirements on the booking page. Do not infer an age limit from its absence in the short description.

Our recommendation

Start with the instructor-and-equipment lesson for €49.29 if this is your first attempt: it is the cheaper of the two and the only one that waives the price if you do not stand up. Select the private-or-group lesson when you want to choose the teaching format yourself.
