Sloths and a Waterfall from Tamarindo: Is the Inland Day Trip Worth It?
5 min read
Choose the small-group rainforest and sloths day for €170.26 if you can manage a moderate hike with stairs and want hanging bridges in the Tenorio rainforest. Choose the private sloth, waterfall and culture tour for €255.40 if you want a shorter, private day with your own guide and vehicle. Both include a waterfall swim, lunch, and coffee and chocolate.
Two different places, not two versions of one tour
The private tour goes to the Llanos de Cortés waterfall, where you can swim in the pool below the fall when weather and local conditions permit, and then to a forest walk in search of sloths. The highlights on the booking page name a sloth sanctuary; reviewers describe the tour and lunch there as the high point. A Guanacaste-style lunch, a coffee tour and a chocolate tour follow. Pickup is available from Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa and the Papagayo Peninsula. Entrance fees for the waterfall and the sloth park, transport, lunch, a bilingual guide and a bottle of water are listed as included; tips are not.
The small-group day starts with a swim at a waterfall in tropical forest, then drives about 40 minutes to the Tenorio area for a rainforest hike with hanging bridges — about 2.5 kilometres, according to the booking page. After lunch at a small local restaurant come a butterfly garden, a short walk to look for sloths and frogs, including red-eyed tree frogs and poison dart frogs, and a farm visit with coffee, chocolate and sugar cane. Pickup, air-conditioned transport, a naturalist guide, lunch and entry tickets are listed as included; tips are not.
What sets them apart
- Coffee and chocolate are not the difference. Both booking pages include them. Do not pay for the private tour for that reason alone.
- Effort: the small-group day says a moderate hike with stairs requires good physical condition, and it runs rain or shine. It lists itself as unsuitable for pregnant women and people with mobility impairments. The private tour lists itself as unsuitable for wheelchair users, non-swimmers and people with back or heart problems.
- Length: six hours for the private tour against a full day for the small group. The six-hour version leaves room for an evening plan.
- Privacy: only the private tour is just your party. That is the real reason to pay the higher price — for example with young children, a slow pace, or a fixed interest you want to follow.
Neither tour guarantees an animal. Both booking pages describe sightings as depending on nature; the private tour adds that touching the animals is not allowed.
Who should go
This is an inland day, not a quick wildlife stop near Tamarindo. It suits travellers who value a forest walk and a waterfall swim as much as seeing a sloth. It is a poor choice for anyone booking only for one guaranteed encounter, or for a group unwilling to spend part of the day in a vehicle. Bring swimwear, a towel, a change of clothes, sturdy shoes and insect repellent; the small-group day also lists rain gear.
Recommendation
For most couples and small parties who can manage a 2.5-kilometre hike with stairs, book the small-group Tenorio day for €170.26: more forest, hanging bridges, and the same coffee-and-chocolate stop. Pay for the private six-hour tour at €255.40 when your own guide and pace matter more than the longer hike. If the Tenorio area itself draws you, the Tenorio rafting guide explains the white-water option in the same area.
