What the organised day covers
According to the booking page, the guided hike starts in the Las Pailas sector and lasts about two hours, with stops at bubbling mud pots, fumaroles and a small crater. Afterwards comes a short walk to the Oropendola waterfall just outside the park, where you can swim in the blue pool. Lunch is a buffet with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. The day ends at the Río Negro hot springs: ten pools heated by the volcano, plus a volcanic mud bath.
Listed as included: hotel pickup and drop-off, the hike, the waterfall, lunch, the hot springs and mud bath, and the guide. Breakfast and tips are listed as not included. The provider stops for coffee or breakfast on the way, which you pay for yourself. The park entrance fee appears in neither list, so ask the provider before you book.
Pickup times depend on where you stay: 6:30 a.m. for Tamarindo and Langosta, 6:00 a.m. for Hacienda Pinilla, where a surcharge per booking applies. The drive to the park takes one to two hours. Bring swimwear and a towel: one reviewer missed the hot springs for lack of a swimsuit. Two reviewers would have liked more time at the springs; one mentions about an hour there.
Organised or independent
SINAC, the national parks authority, divides the park into two visitor sectors, Las Pailas and Santa María, with different opening days. Las Pailas opens Tuesday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. Santa María opens Thursday to Monday and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Tickets are sold only through SINAC’s online booking system.
The Las Pailas circular trail is three kilometres long, and SINAC estimates about two hours for it — about as long as the organised hike. SINAC adds that swimming is not possible at the two waterfalls on the park’s longer Waterfalls trail. The tour’s swimming stop, Oropendola, lies outside the park.
Going independently is better for walkers who want SINAC’s trails at their own pace. If you drive, compare rental cars for Tamarindo, but only after checking the sector’s opening days for your date.
The alternative: La Leona
The most reviewed listing in our whole Tamarindo selection is not this volcano day but a private hike to La Leona waterfall for €40.33. It lasts three hours and passes volcanic caves and river pools on the way to the canyon. You meet the guide at a meeting point in the Liberia area, and the booking page lists hotel pickup as not included — from Tamarindo you need a car. With transport from Tamarindo, the La Leona waterfall tour with pickup for €134.42 takes seven hours. La Leona involves river crossings and swimming, but no mud pots and no hot springs.
Recommendation
For a first visit with several experiences in one day, book the volcano, waterfall and hot-springs day for €112.02. If your date is a Monday, when SINAC lists Las Pailas as closed, ask the provider where the hike takes place. Choose La Leona if a waterfall hike matters more to you than volcanic activity. Choose an independent park day if the trails are the main event and you are happy to arrange entry and transport yourself.
