Turtle Night Tours from Tamarindo: Leatherbacks, Las Baulas and the Rules
5 min read
Choose the two-hour turtle-watching night tour for a focused evening from Tamarindo. It costs €67.21, starts with a 5:30 pm pickup and drives to a turtle beach about 40 minutes north of town. The operator names leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles as the three species in the area; which of them comes ashore, and whether any does, is never guaranteed.
Las Baulas: the park and its season
Las Baulas National Marine Park was created to protect the leatherbacks that nest on Playa Grande, Ventanas and Langosta, the beaches either side of Tamarindo. Costa Rica’s tourism board gives the nesting season as 20 October to 15 February. During nesting season, October to February, SINAC, the protected-area authority, allows visitors on the park beaches only until 5 pm.
One point matters before you book for leatherbacks: SINAC’s own page for the park currently states that there is no turtle observation and that estuary visits run through local guides. If seeing a leatherback inside Las Baulas is the reason for your trip, ask the operator which beach the night tour visits on your date.
The rules change the experience
The tourism board lists these park rules: groups of at most 15 people, accompanied by a tourism operator or local guide; no photographing or touching the turtles; watching from a distance and in silence; and only the guide may use a torch, fitted with a red filter. Expect periods of waiting and walking on dark sand. The same source recommends long trousers against mosquitoes at night and plenty of water.
The two-hour night tour is the cleanest fit if you want one evening activity without turning it into a half-day excursion. The Playa Minas turtle tour lasts four hours and describes black turtles with a chance of leatherbacks at Playa Nombre de Jesús. It names its beach, which is outside Las Baulas, so it is an alternative rather than a way into the park.
Who should skip it
Do not book if silence, darkness, uncertain wildlife and waiting would frustrate you or your children. The night tour’s own description says nesting depends on beach conditions such as clear sandbars and temperature. Anyone expecting flash photographs or guaranteed nesting will have the wrong evening.
Our recommendation
For most Tamarindo visitors, book the expert-naturalist night tour for €67.21. Go between 20 October and 15 February if leatherbacks are the point, and confirm the beach with the operator before paying.
